Memorial Hall was built as a Memorial to local service men who served in World War 1. Designed by Edward Leber, an Architect from York, PA. It encompassed several offices and meeting rooms on both floors and the theater was on the first floor. This was the place to watch a movie or live show in the early 20's. This building held local plays, musicals, and concerts. In 1923 the theater and community center opened and became the heart of the community. It later became the home of the local volunteer Fire Department building and was occupied by them till the mid 1970's. Through the years it was also home to the public library, American Legion Post, and the Middletown High School. Although it is vacant now it isn't hard to recognize it for what it once was...a beautiful theater that retains nearly all of its original woodwork, trim, flooring, and light fixtures. These are very rare survivals that set Memorial Hall apart from other buildings undergoing rehabilitation. Therefore, Memorial Hall is a rare architectural expression within the collection of buildings in Middletown and also because of its high level of integrity of design, materials and workmanship.
