The Henry Shoemaker/Brigham Farmhouse is located along the northern edge of the Old National Pike in Middletown, MD. It dates from approximately 1810-1815 and is a 2 1/2 story (plus basement), five bay brick structure and a one-story kitchen wing extending to the rear. The property was entered into the National Register of Historic Places, a division of the National Park Service, US Department of the Interior. This property includes a 25' x 30' two-level barn currently used as a workshop with over 1,000 sq. ft. of heated space. On the grounds is also a small detached cottage that includes a spacious living room, bedroom, kitchen and full bath, that is presently rented for $1,000 per month. Most window and door frames are original, consisting of moderately wide members, secured at the corners with pegs. A notable feature of the exterior is the pair of cast iron tie rod anchors, one on each gable. The remaining interior woodwork is a conservative mixture of Federal and Georgian period elements. The Henry Shoemaker farmhouse has a unique place in Maryland's nineteenth century history in the area of military history, transportation and architecture. The single most important event relating to the house was The Battle of South Mountain which occurred on September 14, 1862. The farm was used as a campground for Federal troops after the Battle of Gettysburg. For energy efficiency, the present owner framed out on the inside of the house, 2" x4" insulated walls with new drywall, plus installed Andersen energy efficient windows throughout (except for 3 original windows). The 4 Levels comprise of four Bedrooms and three full Bathrooms and four working fireplaces and large rooms throughout. With 2,900 sq. ft. of finished living space above ground, this historical home is a rare find. Showing by appointment only with 48 hours notice required and the Listing Agent must accompany.
